Did you know that spices have a shelf life too? As with all things food, freshness seems to slip away with time and when it comes to spices and herbs, the flavor leaves as well.
McCormick, a leading producer of retail packages spices, have provided general guidelines to help determine when your spices have turned to the dark side. They have even included a few tips on how to keep them fresh.
Ground spices: 2-3 years
Whole spices: 4 years
Herbs: 1-3 years
Seeds:(except poppy seeds and sesame seeds which last for 2 years) 4 years
Seasoning Blends: 1-2 years
Extracts:(except vanilla extract which lasts indefinitely) 4 years
The Flavor Experts at McCormick Recommend the Following Tips:
Color: Check the color of your spices and herbs—they should be vibrant. If the color has faded, chances are so has the flavor.
Aroma: Rub or crush the spice or herb in your hand. If the aroma is weak and flavor is not apparent, it’s time to replace it.
Storage: Store herbs and spices in a tightly capped container and keep away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Tightly close bottle lids immediately after use.
Handling: Minimize moisture and caking by using a dry measuring spoon and avoid sprinkling directly into a steaming pot.
