Below are several steps that you can take to help save money at the checkout;

  1. Plan your meals in advance.  Plan all of your weekly meals in advance and make a shopping list for what you need to make the meals. Eating at home is one of the best ways to cut down on your budget.
  2. Stick to the list. When shopping, take your list with you and only buy the items that are on the list.  Marketing is tricky business and a marketers job is to convince you that you need what they’re selling.  The boxes are bright, the food looks delicious and the placement makes their products hard to ignore.  We’ve all fallen victim tho the impulse buy and that’s what the stores count on.  As a rule of thumb, if it’s not on the list, you don’t need it.
  3. Avoid shopping when you are hungry or tired.  It is said that your eyes are bigger than your stomach and that is exactly what retailers are banking on. If you shop when hungry or tired, you are more likely to buy items that look delicious. This is another good reason to use a shopping list.
  4. Many grocery stores offer printable coupons on their website and some stores have loyalty cards that you can load coupons onto from their website.  Check with your local grocery store and see if there are deals on their website. It is a good idea to plan some of the meals on your planner around what is on sale.
